Typically, every individual experiences heartbreaking defeats and life-changing victories. Oftentimes we compare our past experiences when dipping our toes in new ventures. Take Sarah Hoffmeister: an avid surfer and extraordinary actress. She understands the art of patience and the importance of a beginner status, as a layman surfer would never dare to attempt an intense trick right off the bat; much like someone who has never acted in a professional setting may opt to start out with the basics. For this reason, Sarah dabbled in background roles and extra spots until she felt a sense of comfort and control in the industry. As her expertise in Hollywood expanded, much like when she mastered an immaculate cutback on an intense wave, she took the leap and landed a major movie role. Sarah is set to star alongside Katie Holmes in the upcoming drama, The Secret: Dare to Dream. Originally adapted from Rhonda Byrne's best-selling novel, the film follows a hardworking, young widow struggling to raise three children on her own. However, a powerful storm brings a devastating challenge and a mysterious handyman, Bray Johnson, into the family’s life. His presence and belief in the power of positive thinking re-ignites the family's spirit. In this exclusive interview, Sarah details her experience working in the upcoming drama, her passions outside of acting, and her various charity work ventures. Coming from Katie Holmes herself, “Sarah has a beautiful career ahead of her.”
Megan Morgante: Did anything/anyone, in particular, inspire you to pursue acting?
Sarah Hoffmeister: I was always into musical theater as a kid, so my mom had the idea for me to try film acting and I loved it. I started out by booking background roles to get to know the ropes. Eventually, I started auditioning and taking acting classes.
MM: Can you give an overview of your past in the entertainment industry & how it led you to where you are now?
SH: When I first started I did a lot of background roles, which then led me to get more principal roles. I started to work the ranks from there, with the help of my mom and agents.
MM: Do you have any hobbies or activities you enjoy partaking in when you’re not acting?
SH: When I’m not acting I love to surf. I’ve grown up at the beach, so surfing has always been a big part of my life. I also love to sing and make music. My whole family is very musical, so music has also been a big part of my life. I’m also a part of my youth group band where I sing and play guitar.
MM: You’re involved in A Walk on Water, STAR Eco Station & assisting with your church youth group! What drew you to working with these particular charities?
SH: Ever since I was little, I’ve always been very involved with my church. I wanted to be a part of A Walk on Water because of my deep love for the ocean. I know how therapeutic the ocean can be and I want to share the joy it brings with others. I’ve also always had a deep love for animals, so I love to volunteer at STAR Eco Station.
MM: What was it like to be a part of the upcoming film, The Secret?
SH: It was an all-around incredible experience and the energy on set was always so positive. The whole cast and crew became a big family over the few months we were on set. Although we had a lot of problems on set with the weather, we were able to get through it by keeping a positive mindset.
MM: What was your experience like working so closely with the remarkable Katie Holmes?
SH: It was not only an amazing experience to work alongside Katie, but to also learn from her. She has so much knowledge and experience in the industry, so being able to learn and work with her was incredible!
MM: If there was one thing you would want viewers to take away with them after watching The Secret, what would it be?
SH: I would want viewers to realize the difference a positive lifestyle can make. Negativity is like a toxin in our lives and it keeps growing and growing. Being positive throughout life will make you so much happier!
MM: Very frequently when watching cinema, a particular character teaches us things about life, struggle, or love. Was there anything, in particular, your character, Missy, taught you throughout the storyline?
SH: Missy taught me throughout the storyline to look on the bright side and to not compare myself to others. Missy struggles with insecurity and comparison, but once she learns to let go of these things, her life changes and is filled with much more joy and happiness.
MM: Have you ever experienced any challenges throughout your career?
SH: Acting is a very difficult career path to take. It comes with a lot of rejection, time, money, and effort. However, I believe that if I stick with what I love, it will all work out in the end.
MM: Of all the roles you have played in the past, which one is your favorite?
SH: My favorite role to play was Jamie Cohen on 9-1-1. It was such an exciting role to play because of all of the action and special effects involved in the show.
MM: If you could work with anyone in the industry, who would it be?
SH: I would love to work with either Margot Robbie or Timothée Chalamet. They’re both incredible actors and seem like such genuine and kind people.
MM: If you weren’t pursuing acting, what would you aspire to do?
SH: If I wasn’t pursuing acting, I would want to become a veterinarian. I’ve always had a big passion for animals and that has always been something that I’ve wanted to do!
